I've been immersed in tango for over a decade, and this music continues to captivate me whether I'm teaching, on the floor, or building the next tanda. I play what resonates with me first, because the music must work for social dancing above all. When selecting a tanda, I look for that magic in an orchestra—the kind that pulls even exhausted milongueros out of their seats. I find this quality most often in Golden Age orchestras and select later recordings. I believe a milonga's atmosphere should shift throughout the evening, and I work to keep tandas varied and engaging. My ideal milonga? One where you leave not quite remembering which songs played, but knowing you had a beautiful time and your heart feels a little fuller.
