On safety
We brought her to the most beautiful room
A friend was visiting, so we took her to the most beautiful milonga in the city — the light, the music, the floor. We wanted her to see what our scene could be.
She left early, and never wanted to go back. It was a long time before she told us why.
The man who ran it kept pulling her onto the floor whether she wanted to dance or not. Never violent — just past every line, held too close and too long, until the night turned to dread. No one knew. We were right there, and no one knew. A room can be beautiful and still be unsafe — and from the outside, none of us could tell.
